    Default 2008 451 petrol V-belt replacement

Havenít actually had anything to ask about my 2008 fortwo 451 for a while as itís been utterly reliable! (1 litre petrol, 70bhp, non-turbo Mitsubishi 3-cylinder) - but Iíve still got it. Itís done 51,000 miles now, and is 12 years old. The belts that drive the air conditioning and the alternator/water pump have never been changed. So although the mileage is not especially big the belts are 12 years old. So Iím guessing that they should be replaced as I believe itís the inside of the belt that wears/degrades, which canít be seen without removing the belt. As far as I can determine one is V-belt for water pump and alternator - part No. A0019934496 and the other one is V-belt for the air conditioning compressor - part no. A0019934596.

There seems to be a special tool required to change one or both of these belts (listed on Smartcar of America website as Part No. 451 589 00 10 00). Anyone know anything about this procedure? Iíve found some info. about changing the belts on a diesel (using Easygreen special tool) but mineís petrol. I also notice on the diesel that pre-tension has to be Ďsetí on one of the belts - is this also the case on the petrol version?

Iím not intending to try the belt change myself but I happen to work in a Ford dealership so I'm hoping they can do it for me. They have a large collection of special tools (not all Ford related) but I donít know if any of them would be suitable for this particular task. Iím not near to any Smart specialists or MB dealerships (well, the one I am sort of near is not very good and doesnít seem at all interested in Smart, even though they are a Smart dealership).

    Any advice welcome...

Well ok, can anyone confirm that I've even got the right part numbers for the two belts? The aircon belt actually fitted to the car from new has 07W51 040 041 042 MADE IN SPAIN written on it. So is a A0019934596 likely to be the correct replacement?

Nobody is interested in belts these days so it would seam you are entirely on your own.

How do you mean 'not interested'? Do cars not last long enough for anyone to bother changing them? Mind you, In the course of my work I regularly drive cars for scrappage that are newer than my Smart.

I'm curious too as to what tolsen meant too ....
My previous 451 turbo died before I had the need to check/replace any drive belts.
The belts on my Roadster have been changed in our (long) ownership but that was wile they were off for other things.

I'll explain my point in more detail once a month has passed since start of thread.
