Surprised if that is not covered in the manual.
However unless it is a new miracle material it's going to be the same process as usual, something to kill blooms of lichens clean spots of gunk, then re-proof the fabrics water repellancy.

1/2 a bottle of autoglym renovator treatment of similar.

    DO NOT RE-PROOF THE CANVAS!

Speak to Peter Jones at Smart-Mania - he repairs/replaces smart canvas roofs for a living. He works directly with Hartz the original manufacturer of the canvas and the stuff is NOT designed to be waterproofed - quite the reverse - it's designed to absorb and wick water away which keeps it supple and free moving. It has an impermeable layer of rubber sandwiched in the middle to prevent ingress into the car.

If you proof the canvas, you will have water beading and running off the roof which you might think would be good, but it's not. It causes the canvas to dry out too quickly which in turn causes it to age prematurely, resulting in cracking, fibre damage and shrinkage. Peter will tell you that Renovo is the single product which ensures he has the biggest stream of customers coming to him for replacement roofs.

Anything that "cleans" the fabric is absolutely fine - I use autoglym.
Anything that "proofs" the fabric is absolutely NOT fine and will eventually wreck your roof.

As I say, speak to Peter at Smart-Mania for a full explanation.

It is a laminate sandwich then, somewhat like a DPM then!
That really should be a klaxon warning in a handbook & from sales personnel.

    Thanks for the advice!

You would think wouldn't you... but no, if you go to a smart dealer, they'll happily sell you a smart branded roof maintenance set of cleaner AND proofer!

Seems they're happy to take your cash and let you find out the issue years later when it's out of warranty...

I've never heard such guff about cleaning hoods, drying out and shrinking in all my life. I may not have fitted hundreds of new hoods, but as a chemical engineer I can tell you the "canvas" (ho hum!) in these hoods does not 'dry out' in the manner aforementioned.

Use something that isn't too harsh and you'll be fine. The Autoglym cleaner and re proofer system has a good rep, the Renovo product less so. Once its properly clean keep it that way to avoid the need to use the cleaning product again.
The difference between good and great is nothing more than effort and commitment.

The official Smart handbook states clearly one should apply something called Smartcare imprengnation which I assume is some sort of fabric protection.

If you think it's "guff" then speak to Peter Jones.
He's been replacing canvas roofs for the best part of 20 years and he tells you that fabric protector is the biggest bonus to his business.

Why not ask him? He IS and expert - and he works very closely with Hartz who manufacture the fabric.

Years of evidence speaks much higher volumes than anything else.
