Default Advice needed from all you expert "knob fiddlers"

Good people of the forum (& knob fiddlers)

Having taken possession of a 450 drinks holder (what gets me excited these days is So sad)!

& a 450 parcel shelf, sans six "knob" / end cap bungs, what is the best way of keeping them attached?

Are the bungs silicone rubber / can I use a general purpose silicone rubber sealant to stick them more firmly to the metal rods?

    If not, then what?

(you just know that these will go walkies otherwise, this is the first one i'd seen on ebay with all the bungs present).

I've purposely spent time tracking both items due to the potential of my kid driving this, & therefore "spilt" drink / boot window stoved in because some tea-leaf could see something interesting in the exposed boot.

So I guess its more or less "original" spec & complete now, bar the inflator / compressor which i'm not bothered about as they were a cheap nasty design that will have degraded over time.

I've never had a problem with my "knob ends" falling off.

I would have thought owt that's sticky would do.

I've been wary of silicones / rubber & the likes for a few years, so many variants (chemical compositions) & the fact that the fool of a vicar in our house before us tried filling a couple of pinholes in bitumen felt with silicone, which reacts badly with tar products.

I bought a petzl a few years ago (well another one) the silicone on/off button started showing signs of "tackyiness within 18 months & has now effectively rotted away... maybe a reaction to a wet wipe, (no other unit has suffered the same) or lousy mixing of the ingredients? ..so i'm careful, & considering the age of the rubber on my "new" 2nd hand unit, cautious as its already old, ..will try cleaning & rejvuenating em then see.

EDIT: was cleaning the vinyls accumulated stains (soapy water & a fresh kitchen sponge pad ..doing nowt) & one of the 6 knobs made a break for it somewhere dark.

Precisely why I need to adhere them.

Lots of dark places in these Smarts. My mums gold wedding ring is in one of them in my Smart but I can't find it.

Invite your local metal detectorists club, settings to gold, comb the car.

Just been out to fit them both, I was under the impression the drink holder didn't sit on the floor, ..that would explain the velcro though. ..doh.

& I lost another "knob" ...& found it, lost twice in 10 minutes, ..something of a design afterthought by smart. ..so if there is anything I can use that won't melt them like the wicked witch of the west

A small dab of Araldite (rapid), enough to hold it securely, not enough to lock it on 'til the edge of time.

    Clean both surfaces first obvs.

I had similar issues with the end caps on my flexible parcel shelf cover.

It may just be coincidence, but the solution that worked for me was to simply buy new end caps from a dealer. Over the years I think the original ones had gone somewhat brittle, whereas the new ones felt a bit softer and more flexible and so far have remained in situ.

Sounds like the jobs a good un 👍 & may ensure a good tight grip whether clumsily inserted in the back or not ..(precisely how they ended up popping off prematurely into the undergrowth).

Used some pfluger rubber treatment on them & they came out a treat.

They were sort & squishy, possibly already replaced, just incredibly loose.
