I made a special tool out of top section of a street light lamp post which are commonly available all over so easily sourced.

Unsure if above link works. Does not appear right on my iPhone but works on a pc. There is no need to heat the ring. Important to clean any rust off mating surface on drive shaft.

    Thanks guys.

So had it scanned & has come back with one fault code:

P0141 02 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 2)

I'm not that mechanically minded, could that have caused the issues I have had?

    Thanks

It's possible that the code is caused by a wiring issue which is also causing your symptoms, but if it's just a faulty sensor then it's unlikely.

Oxygen sensor two is the one downstream of the catalytic converter and it's primary purpose is to monitor how efficiently the converter is working. These sensors don't work correctly unless run at a fairly high temperature, hence the heater circuit.

Sensor two can also influence fuelling in modern EFI systems, so a bad sensor could potentially cause driveability problems, e.g. hesitation, poor idle etc. but not jumping to neutral.

I think for now youve got to keep fully clearing faults and seeing which returns repeatedly, reliably.
Just so you can eliminate ghost/spoof error reporting (i.e. the reporting system at fault rather than an actual sensor exhibiting a real fault)

Id also do that engine earth strap cos the car is ten years old, it cant be at its best now.

So a quick update. Someone on facebook looked at my video & suggested I look at the engine mounting which was fecked so replaced that, lubed the actuator and went for a test drive today and all seemed OK.

Except for the P0141 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2.

Just called Merc and they said it is the same sensor for up & down stream, that sound right? If so where would I get one please?

Also would I be better off changing plugs first & then seeing if the fault comes back?
