Sorry for the confusion I meant I have £ 1800 left in my bank account after paying for the car.

Why didn't you just do a bank transfer ???

and why didn't you just get the floor mats thrown in with the deal ??

Seems funny the car is precisely on the 16K button and the floor mats are precisely £ 37.97 inc 5% GST

Is this dealer on a long straight road or something ??

I'm puzzled as to why you've paid the full amount when they/you won't get the car for another two months. Is that a Jersey thing?
Better hope they don't go out of business before then

Well they said the car was originally £ 16377 but they let me have it for £ 16000 to secure my business this month.

The UK OTR price is £ 16955 that’s with 20% VAT so I assumed it would be the same with only 5% GST ie £ 14835.

It turns out they charge a £ 1095 delivery fee whereas Smart in the UK only charge £ 275 inc VAT.

I guess this is because they are a locally owned franchise and have to pay to have that status.

With regard to paying the money up front I know I can trust them and I doubt they’ll go out of business.

They’ve given me a letter confirming receipt of £ 15000 in relation to my Smart Cabriolet purchase.

They don’t actually pay for the stock until the car is well through the pipeline of delivery... so they’re just sitting on your money for no good reason, it wouldn’t have shifted the price.

Giving you a receipt for 15K wouldn’t be much use if they did go out of business/into receiverships before the car had changed hands, you’d be well down the list of people wanting payout.
What’s so unusual about giving you a receipt anyway ?

I’d have given them a decent deposit as a goodwill thing (as is usual, and signed the sales contract) , but kept the bulk of the money in the bank until delivery day. (Again, as is usual with these things)

The only real issue with paying up front is if they go out of business. My friends mum worked for them back in the sixties so they’ve been in business at least fifty years.

It'll probably be OK, but as it says in most financial literature "Past performance is not a guarantee of future results".
With Brexit/Noxit/Halfxit imminent I'd say that was truer than ever.

They’ve changed owners over the years, it’s not owned by the same people who owned it in the sixties...

One good thing if it’s delivered in March, it will mean it’s a 19 plate. In Jersey we don’t go by plates just the month, day and year it was registered. So if it was delivered in January it would be a 2019 same as if it was in December a 2019.
