Default Tightening front suspension strut have I, tightened it to much?

After replacing & tightening the front suspension strut (shock absorber) it still rattles. A Used replacement strut is used. I have rebuilt the replacement strut with cup, spring, anti-friction bearing, top bearing mount etc.
Should the top spring carrier plate be tightened all the way utilising all of the threads (image). The car is buoyant again but rattles over bumps. have I tightened the top carrier plate too much or is this absrober also scrap. (image sourced: FQ101.co.uk accessed:04.12.18)

There are two nuts. The thin nut clamps the strut bearing against the shoulder on the end of the damper rod. The top nut (usually a locking nut) clamps the dished retaining plate against the thin nut. Both nuts should be done up tightly.

Are you sure it is the shock absorber that is rattling? It could be the anti roll bar links, they are prone to wearing out.

Quite sure it is the shock. I can describe it as the shock being to 'short'. this is why i queried tightening the spring too much prior to installation onto the car. there is a dipped cap which presses the spring and a bolt to hold the cap depressing the spring into position. Does this bolt have to utilise all of the threads as I have tightened it down as far as it goes. maybe loosen it some?

Does your strut assembly look like this?

Make sure first nut is tight before fitting strut in position. Tighten top nut to specified torque.

By the way, top bearing is easily cleaned, greased and reassembled. Both of mine are original from 2002 and have suffered 249,000 mainly on rough Scottish roads.

    Another tip.

There is no need to remove front panels to undo top strut nut.
Use an impact gun, long extension and impact wobble joint.
Access is through service hatches below wind screen.

Good and cheap wobble joint same as mine but differently branded:

Thanks for the great images. They do look just like them in the picture the, first nut was tight and I will next time rebuild the bearing. thanks for the advice.
