Default 1.3 Passion - Air Conditioning not working

Hi there - my 1.3 passion air conditioning stopped working (it stopped a while ago, but never bothered looking), so I brought the car to a local aircon specialist and after running the diagnostics, both the AC Compressor and condenser needs replacing, including labour is around 950 or so.
He suggesting that it could be cheaper if I could source parts like second hand, at least for the AC

I did a quick search online for Condensers and AC Compressors and there seem to vary in price quite a bit.

I plan to keep the car another year or so, it works very well, I really like it but I drive a fair bit so doing a lot of mileage. Is it okay to order parts myself, any particular brand I should order?
(As you can tell I don't know too much about fixing the car myself )

I’d change just the condenser first (and fit it yourself) , then use a service that offers a ‘no ac, no pay’ refill service...

Why precisely is he saying the compressor is kaput?, it’s not unheard of , but it’s a lot rarer than the condenser/rad
