Default 1.3 Passion - Air Conditioning not working

Hi there - my 1.3 passion air conditioning stopped working (it stopped a while ago, but never bothered looking), so I brought the car to a local aircon specialist and after running the diagnostics, both the AC Compressor and condenser needs replacing, including labour is around £950 or so.
He suggesting that it could be cheaper if I could source parts like second hand, at least for the AC
    Compressor.

I did a quick search online for Condensers and AC Compressors and there seem to vary in price quite a bit.

I plan to keep the car another year or so, it works very well, I really like it but I drive a fair bit so doing a lot of mileage. Is it okay to order parts myself, any particular brand I should order?
(As you can tell I don't know too much about fixing the car myself )

    Thanks

I’d change just the condenser first (and fit it yourself) , then use a service that offers a ‘no ac, no pay’ refill service...

Why precisely is he saying the compressor is kaput?, it’s not unheard of , but it’s a lot rarer than the condenser/rad

took a while and brought it a air-conditioning specialist, they replaced the parts but they couldn't finish the job and connect the wiring/ground, so the aircon still doesn't work. I am finding difficult to find any auto electrician willing to look at the car as soon as I mention it's a Smart.
Surely there must be someone in the SE able to connect the wiring? Any directory of tradies?

    air-conditioning specialist
    Obviously not

An aircon system isn't rocket science , and not particularly specific to a particular car model.

What parts did they change specifically?

and where precisely in the SE are you ?

they replaced both the condenser and compressor, even the gas has been refilled and apparently it's only the wiring the problem.
Dartford area; I called the garage listed in Dartford and they suggested that parts should be plug and play and no wiring required.

Given that the first garage charged me for the parts I am now stuck with the bill and no aircon. Thinking to ask them to take the parts back and remediate. Very frustrated

Indeed a cop out, I don't think the so called specialist should have taken the job without the knowledge and install expensive parts without reaching resolving the initial issue. The garage is now not taking my calls which is target annoyed. Actually do I have any recourse from a fair trading perspective?
