Would this be deemed normal due to my relatively low mileage, or does that sound broken?

The conditions according to the manual:

If the automatic start/stop system automatically switches off the engine, the[@]
symbol is shown in the instrument cluster.

This is the case if, among other things:
    • the indicator lamp in the automatic start/stop system button does not light up
    • the outside temperature is within the range that is suitable for the system
    • the engine is at normal operating temperature
    • the set temperature for the vehicle interior has been reached
    • the battery is sufficiently charged
    • the system detects that the windscreen is not misted up when the air -conditioning system is switched on
    • the tailgate is closed
    • the driver's door is closed and the driver's seat belt is fastened.

Red face Re: Start / stop never really works

    Cheers all,

To test, this week I've been driving to work with no fan, no media, no lights. Start/Stop is enabled, when I stop the orange start/stop is showing on my dash, but nothing happens.

I'll give Mercedes a bell and see. I would have thought if the Smart is being marketed as a City car, I'm pretty much doing the defacto use and would expect it to work - my partners Audi does similar mileage and immediately kicks in.

    Thanks again for input.

How old is the car ?

And what is your resting (engine off for 15 minutes) battery voltage ?

It's a year and 2 months, It's never worked as I thought it should, as I said only occasionally popping on after a long drive out. I'll check the Voltage.

Stop/Start on mine is very random as well.
Same journey every working day, which is 20 miles each way, mixture of all road types.
Often it will not stop at all, regardless of ambient temperature or usage of a/c etc.
    Other times, it works fine.

Just had it serviced as well, and as per OP, never thought to mention it!

Start-Stop works most of the time for me. I've found it's less likely to do so if the environment outside is hot and I have the AC turned off. For the most part I'm happy I have the feature. My fellow drivers sometimes less so, since that second for the engine to start once I engage the clutch is a second too long for the impatient ones..

Hill-Start assist is voodoo and on random occasions fails me. Usually at the worst times, too. I can quickly rectify this with clutch control, but on some of the auto ForFours I've driven, this caused more than a couple of cars behind me to get fright when I roll backwards.

Went for a drive this morning and forgot to press the button to disable stop start. Anyway whenever I stopped the amber light came on indicating conditions werenít right for the stop start to activate.

Judging by this thread it seems Iím not the only one to have this. Car is 1 year 7 months old and I do 23 miles once a week on a Sunday non stop.

Just donít need to drive any more often so donít drive for the sake of it.

I donít think itís broken but conditions werenít right for it to operate. Why would there even be an amber warning light if it worked all the time.

Well Iíve got it sussed, my car doesnít auto lock the doors at 8 mph as I havenít got it set that way therefore the stop start wonít activate if the doors are unlocked.

Went for a drive just now with the doors locked and stop start worked perfectly. So thereís no need to press the button to disable stop start as long as you leave the doors unlocked.

That must be a new thing, though it seems a somewhat unlikely interlock. Ours has never been set to auto-lock and does the stop-start if you let it.

Have you checked the list of pre-requisites to see if it's something else? As you drive it so little I'd think the battery state is a likely 'culprit'.

One of the requirements for stop start to operate is that the drivers door is locked. It even says so earlier in this thread ďthe driver's door is closed and the driver's seat belt is fastened.Ē

As I say mine doesnít auto lock the doors as I havenít set it up that way.

You need to press the lock button on the dash for several seconds to engage auto lock.

Last week I drove the entire journey with the doors unlocked and stopped the car dead several times throughout the journey but all I got was the amber warning light.

This week I locked the doors and once the engine had warmed up I had a green light and the engine turned off when I stopped and back on again when I got going again.

I tested it twice and both times it stop started. I didnít think it was going to work as about a mile into my journey I had the amber light, but once the engine had warmed up it stop started.
