    Default 450 Smart RIP

Mates Red 2002 450 Cabrio has gone to the dump. It had only done just over 100,000 miles so still a youngster but the gearbox went and it wasn't worth repairing.

He's gone for a Suzuki Swift GL supermini to replace it but he'll miss it.

I am wondering about the same. When mine went it was the deep race bearings that were worn out making an unbearable noise. Only the bearings that were sealed were bad. All four open bearings that are lubed by the transmission oil were as good as new. I changed all six deep race bearings and made sure to remove oil seals on the two sealed bearings before fitting. Only cost me about 22 in total.

The Smart 450 transmission is very easy to work on.

A knackered sealed bearing with seal removed.

Scott on TRN sells gearboxes for about 50 each. It's so rare for the gearbox to fail that he has a shed load of the things he can't sell....

Not sure it was the gearbox might have been the clutch. Mate is not a mechanic so I was going by what he told me.

Your mate is not a mechanic yet you scrapped your car on his say so?
If you can't see the nonsense in that statement.... you need to see a doctor!

Think it was his mate's, who isn't a mechanic, whose car was scrapped. Gearbox, clutch maybe a puncture?

If you have a 16 year old car and almost anything that isn't a consumable goes wrong it's likely to cost more than the car's value to fix.
If you aren't mechanically minded, and possibly want a different car anyway at the time, then junking it seems perfectly reasonable. These cars aren't a rarity yet, so why expect a non-enthusiast to preserve one.

Yeah it had rust on the roof and the plastic rear window of the cabrio roof had a tear in it. Also back of car had a crack in it. Wasn't in the best of conditions anyway.
