If you do the grease thing just to eliminate as it won't do it any harm whatsoever , then go searching for wiring damage to clutch actuator and gear pos sensor ....

For the wiring thing scroll down on this page http://www.fq101.co.uk/how-to-guides...197-the-3-bars
    Brilliant. Thanks

Well it's now completely packed up. Won't select a gear and now won't start. Waiting for Green Flag to either fix or recover the car

Try a clutch actuator that is known to be good. Will be wiring if still playing up.

Yes. It's now at Automerc in Newbury waiting for the prognosis. Fingers crossed it isn't too expensive.

I hope you mean premature death of the actuator rather than the car!

I highly doubt Automerc will be able to solve this. They will probably make a wrong diagnosis, change a lot of parts at your expense and fail to solve the problem.

It needs to go to a smart specialist.

Do they not have a good reputation then? Anyway, had an email today saying that they think they have solved the problem, so we'll see. Fingers crossed.
