    New here on this forum - did you manage to sort it out?? I ask because I've just bought a Smart FourTwo to tow behind my MH.

    Yes. New steering damper did the trick, also had ball joints changed at same time. These were not part of the issue, but as I had them they were put on. The steering felt much different with the new damper, and not necessarily better, but as the I had put up with the old one going lazy over many years, the difference was noticable.(there was more resistance to wheel input especially the further away from straight ahead, unlike with the old damper still on). And it can now be towed. Before I could no even get 6 feet from setting off without violent oscillations to the steering. All this after I had given up and bought a trailer for it!
