But the tyre wall will give when you collide with a kerb, so dpmike is correct.

My point is it's not a lot worse then when I had the original Continental 155/60/15 fitted. It's always possible to kerb if you're not careful but it's something I haven't done as yet touchwood.

Found this on the SCOA forums..

He's referring to fitting 145 on all four wheels which would require slimmer width rear wheels then the original. Says its ok if you are not traveling much over 60 MPH. I'd dispute that as they are the safe tyre width for 4.5" rims and as long as you have those or similar all round then no problem at any speed the car is capable of.

In Jersey where I live the speed limit is 40 MPH anyway.

Fitting the rims is not the only factor in 'safe'. The tyre must also be suitable for the load and pressure, and the handling obviously come into it as well.
I'd think that such a significant change of wheel size (as opposed to just a slightly different tyre on a standard rim) would also interest the insurance company.

(The USA doesn't seem to have much in the way of rules about cars once they leave the dealership, so be careful using modification advice from over there.)

Quite a few people have used 145 tyres all round as winter tyres, here is a thread I have contributed too...

Some have used spacers on the rear to "widen the track".

Just because someone has done something odd to their car and says it's fine doesn't mean it is. You tend not to find out that it was actually a bad idea until things go very wrong indeed. Remember the guy a few years back who modified his Land Rover? ... Ended up in a canal and killed his kids.

Manufacturers employ skilled automotive engineers to design and test their cars. Why do you think some complete strangers on the internet know better? With your 40 mph limit it probably doesn't matter, but for those who travel faster it could literally be a matter of life or death.
And to fit winter tyres, presumably to improve grip and handling in adverse conditions, but then use the wrong sizes, thus possibly compromising grip and handling, seems very banana shaped thinking.

Yeah I'm not saying that I would contemplate 145 all round on my car having changed the rear rims to something narrower to fit the narrower tyres. Just pointing out some people do it, rightly or wrongly.

In my case there is no dispute that 145/65/15 on the front are safe on a 4.5" rim so I've nothing to worry about or indeed have any reason to change the front tyres back to 155/60/15.

This is what you get when you compare 175/55/15 on a 5.5" rim with a 145/65/15 on a 4.5" rim...
