Default ESP + ABS light on permanently. Now engine doesn't start

    Hi,

So I'm really concerned about my poor Smart fortwo 2012 passion. I have searched the internet for a solution but I am yet to find a solution.

Late last night on my way home form work my ESP light came on, fortunately i wasn't too far from home . This morning I went to drive it and when i turned the engine on the ESP light and the ABS light remained on. I attempted to put the car into Automatic this didn't work, then reverse - this doesn't register. It did switch to manual but just gear 1, but now the engine doesn't even turn on when I turn the key!!!! Needless to say I'm freaking out!

Just 3 weeks ago I took the car into a specialist dealers to have the computer upgraded for the gear box. Is it related?

Any ideas? Anything I could do at home?

Any advice would be really helpful.

    Thanks

What was the reason you took it for the gearbox update in the first place?

This update is primarily for problems accessing reverse gear intermittantly, is that the problem you were having ?

I suggest you get it to the specialist dealer (who is that by the way?) and get them to read fault codes out to narrow down the problem areas... It will have logged what area is causing the problem.
This will cost 50 or 60 , but they might waive that (or absorb a bit of it) if you go on to let them do the hardware job anyway.

In the mean time, if the car "doesn't even turn on" I suggest you check battery voltage for a start

    Thanks for the prompt reply.
When I had it serviced the engineer said that it needed upgrading - The gear display and the spanner lights were flashing - the update resolved the problem.

This new problem has happened since the update. Currently the issue is as described above. Essentially the car seems to be immobilised now, however just before it was a case of the car signalling the ESP light and ABS and only going into gear 1. Perhaps I immobilised it by playing around with it to try and fix it.... who knows!

Thanks for your advice above. I have arranged for a technician to come out and run a diagnostic on it. I have everything crossed that the problem isn't too serious.

The 451 doesn'thave an immobilisor that you have any interaction or can have any effect on unlike the 450, it's 'driven' by a transponder in the key..

What you could try is to disconnect the main battery count to five and then reconnect as cleanly as possible (just snap the connector back on promptly without dithering) and recheck the cars operation.

Was it a main dealer? the update to the TCU should only be done by a networked Xentry diagnostics system, we have one but not aware of any other specialist that has one?

New fault sounds like a brake light switch, won't start if not in N

no it wasn't a main dealer but they advertised as a authorized Mercedes/smart independent. Based in nottz.

The engineer ran diagnostics. The report simply read: 'car engine will not start' - helpful!

However he fiddled around with the brake a little and managed to get it into N so was able to start it. This he told me confirmed it was the brake switch.

Thank you all for your advise.
