Default Dash lights going like xmas tree + now car wont start!

Hello all, (2002 Smart convertible for 2)

Please help me! My dash is currently flashing like xmas tree lights and now the car wont start...

Yesterday i was driving on the motorway and all of a sudden 4 of the lights came on on my dash. They were; ABS, Handbrake, Indicator and Oil obviously the handbrake wasnt on, nor were the indicators. And i did the oil the other day.

I took the next exit! As i was exiting the motorway there was traffic, so I was crawling along at about 3-5mph. The lights were still showing on my dash, and then i heard a bleeping sound coming from the dash somewhere (seemed to be nearer the passenger side rather than driver's side). At then end of the bleeping (approx 5 secs) the car went into '0' and wouldnt go when i accelerated, it just rev'd. I moved the gear stick to neutral and then back into gear, and it worked again. This happened 4 or 5 times whilst crawling to the exit...

I pulled into a car park straight away and switched the car off. Then, when i turned the ignition back on, several other lights were showing on my dash... Some were flickering too. I started the car a few times, no problems, but lights were still all over the place so I decided not to drive it any further.

Today i returned to my car hoping to drive it to a local garage, and it wouldnt start The fuel pump was working, i could hear it! And it didnt have a flat battery. The key was displaying on the dash, so i believe its to do with the immobiliser not switching off. I pressed unlock several times on my key, and the doors were responding, but the key wouldnt disappear, so i couldnt start it.

Please help me! Id be very grateful for any info / advice.

    Thanks everyone

    Hello Misszoep and to thesmartclub.

I'm not very technical myself but beeping and '0' generally indicate an open door.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately i know the doors were all shut securely as my car didnt bleep when i went to pull away, and was running fine for about 5 miles.

    Hi Zoe,

I would suggest that there is an electrical communication issue that is causing the car to freak out.

The beeping you heard was on the ZEE unit (where the fuses are) in the passenger footwell and generally means that there is some sort of error. It maybe that the dash is faulty and is causing all kind of spurious data to be pumped onto the CAN network that flips out the ZEE unit and then engine control unit that caused you to lose gear. It may also be that something has got damp. Do you have aircon? Is your passenger footwell wet?

It would be useful if you got get to a smart specialist who can connect the proper diagnostics and read out the problems with the systems. This might help to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Whereabouts are you? We can advise on your nearest dealer / independant.

Thats great! Thanks for your advice :o)

I was pretty sure that the problem was electrical, but its so overwhelming trying to pin-point it.

My footwell's are dry. Ive never had any dampness problems with my car. It does have air con, although ive never used it...

My car is currently based in Waltham Forest. A garage called 'dipsticks' has been suggested to me as they are said to specialise in Smart's, although i dont know if they are any good...

    Thanks again :o)

Is Watford too far? If you can make it to: http://s2smarts.co.uk/index.htm, Rob has a wealth of knowledge and can probably pinpoint the issue.

Dipsticks are part of the smarts4you racing team, so they should know what they're doing.

Try pushing the zee unit up a bit (the fusebox essentially) a had a child in the car who kicked mine loose and I had problems exactly as you describe them. It still works its way loose occasionally, but a quick push up and it's fine.

    Hi Everyone.

Id like to thank you all for your help and advice. My car is now running fine (there is a god!). I can confirm the problem was my fuse box! The day after i wrote my appeal on here, I returned to my car and called out my breakdown service. Whilst I was waiting for the guy to arrive, I had a fiddle with my fuse box and pushed every single one to make sure they were in. They all felt secure in the first place, but I gave it a go. After i had done this I thought Id try to start it one last time - and it started!! I drove it round the car park. Switched it off and started it again, and it was back to normal :o)

The only problem I had then was when the breakdown guy pulled up about 60 seconds later and I had to explain that I no longer had a problem...

My baby is fixed :o) Thanks again everyone!

Glad to see you've got it sorted. If you find a way to stop it working its way loose again, let me know!
