I've been bitten by the Roadster bug, and having test driven one yesterday I'm convinced I want one!

However, I've been reading a lot about the leaks endemic in Roadsters, and although I'm happy to live with small leaks, I can see I have two choices regarding the major ones:
1. Buy cheap and private, and prepare to repair/fix any leaks myself.
2. Buy expensive through a trader, from a (non-Merc) Smart reseller who claims he's applies all the recommended repairs already.

My trader worries are:
1. The trader might say that he's applied all the known fixes, but is there a way I can check this to be true? I don't want to pay extra through a trader for a car that's not got the leak fixes applied.
2. When we went for a test drive, the windows steamed up almost immediately, and I've read that this is a sign of water ingestion/dampness. Might this mean the dealer hadn't applied the leak fixes?
3. Even after the leak fixes are applied, what's the likelihood that several years of water ingestion has caused irreversible damage to the car? Could the SAM be swimming in water and just waiting to fry itself? Could water in the doors have caused corrision inside that will come eventually through and bubble the exterior paintwork?

My private sales worries are:
1. If a private seller says he's never had any leaks issues, how can I easily check the car for signs of past water damage? Clearly the carpets etc. will be dry if he's dried it out, but are there any obvious signs of past water ingress? I can't exactly chuck a bucket of water over it to see if it gets wet inside afterall!
2. What else should I look for to be sure I'm not buying a lemon? I've probably only got £5k to spend so I expect I'll be looking at an older model, and it would be nice to avoid one that's got a dying engine/turbo etc. I mean, should I avoid anything over, say, 70k miles?

I'm not afraid to do minor works myself, so I'm happy to have a go at repairing the leaks following the guides I've seen online (Evilution), but I'm also willing to pay a little more from a trader for an already-fixed car. If it's not that big a deal to apply all the repairs (60-pages worth according to the Smart repair guide) then would people recommend buying privately and having a go myself?

What are everyone's thoughts? Thanks in advance, from a very keen Roadster buyer :D

(I might cross-post this to a couple of other forums, so apologies if this seems like bad etiquette)

The Bubblecar Museum smart Camping Weekend

The Bubblecar Museum 2nd Annual Rally
Friday 25th-Sunday 27th May 2012

Open to Microcars pre 1975, 750cc and under, vintage scooters and smarts.

Having recently re-located, this lovely museum re-opened on 18th March at its new home in Langrick, Lincolnshire.
Only this week, they appeared on National TV as part of their launch, such is their popularity.
Well, I have recently been to visit the museum and the owners were really nice and very welcoming. As smarts are effectively modern day micro cars, they are very keen to have us visit.
The camping area is not vast but is very nice and is very close to all the new amenities, so it won’t be necessary to drive to the loo, as in previous camping scenarios. They have even arranged for us to have our own small paddock. The numbers are limited to 20 cars, so please add your name to the list if you wish to come along.

Arrival time is 10am onwards on Friday 25th May.
Payment is CASH on arrival please. £23 per person

If you don’t fancy campsite cooking, there is a small café in the museum and just up the road at the Langrick Station café you can get all day breakfasts.

Here’s what you get for your Rally fee of £23 per person and what’s happening over the weekend:

* Museum entry for the weekend
* Two nights FREE camping
* Prize for ‘Sunday Best’ smart

Friday - Evening barbecue from 7 to 9pm
Saturday - An all day run-out including entrance fees with quiz
- Seriously good live entertainment from the ‘Drowning Fish Band’
- Evening meal

For any further information please visit their website:
And sometimes if I put them on intermittent they will work fine for a short while then turn themselves on constant. To get the wipers to turn off I have to try various positions and then off until they stop.

Any ideas what the problem is? Dirty/corroded switch contacts or a faulty switch? I did wonder briefly if the SAM unit was the culprit but if that was the case I'd have thought that despite me moving the stalk through various positions to get them to stop no amount of fiddling would persuade them to stop (other than turning the ignition off).

I've been very bad. Sorry for being AWOL for so long!

The RedPeril is perilously close to being (perminantly) back on the road, but having exhumed her out of the garage-like shallow grave this week to drive her up to our new house, I discovered (some way up the motorway, I admit), that the ride was a tad bouncy and trashy....

Broken spring. Probably should have done a more thorough walk-round, but I'd already had to get the AA out to jump-start it, and once the engine was running I couldn't stop!

So, folks...

Having done some 74k (including one 18 month 'rest' period, and a second 5 month 'sleep'), she is probably well over-due new shocks as well as springs. I only want a minimal lowering though, 25-30mm. From what I've found via Google, it seams the Bilstein shocks are well regarded, but I'm really struggling to find either a 25mm kit, or the shocks by themselves.

Money IS an object... so the Eibach Pro (-25mm) springs are looking pricey. MadMotors have got Spax (-30/20mm) for £120. Any other suggestions? (oh, and if they are coloured, they have to be red/black/silver to match the car!!).
